Trailer Process • Initial Feedback

Here is a word cloud with some of the initial responses to my first cut.

I also created this short survey using PollSnack

Trailer Process • Paul's Feedback

Getting feedback from as many people as possible was really important, so I asked my lecturer what he felt was positive about my trailer and what could help me improve. Here is a PowToon of the notes I made from out 1 to 1 chat.

Trailer Process • Draft Version

Here is an unfinished version of my trailer. This is the 1:30 mark which I have now gone past due to how much content I want to include. The titles have yet to be edited with proper fades or transitions yet.

Trailer Process • Alternate Opening/Ending Idea

I really like the idea of static imagery as a horror trailer conventions, I have seen this used in many existing trailers and thought about how I could use this concept to guide my narrative. A possibility for my trailer would be to open or end with a picture flash up on the screen like this and then cut to black.

I think this could achieve a really eerie/scary effect as it feels very real to the audience and they can see a relation with their own lives through a classic shock tactic. This can be both frightening and upsetting to my audience.

Trailer Process • Costume & Editing

I've made this short video to show me costume hunting and how the final choices ended up looking on camera when I started editing the new middle section of my trailer. The video shows the initial shopping and ideas for costumes and then how that became part of my trailer and a demonstration of me editing.

Trailer Process • Trailer Finale

Here is a clip which shall be included at the end of my trailer footage. I think the way the hair seems to 'magically' blow backwards as the candle mysteriously goes out has a real connection to the supernatural sub genre. I chose to edit this in an old film style that wasn't too obvious it didn't match the rest of my trailers cinematic style.

Trailer Process • Editing Examples

Here is an example of an existing trailer, which has inspired my own work. Here The Strangers trailer uses fast cuts and jumps between short shot lengths to show the danger that this couple are in. I think this trailer is really relevant to my own work as it features a male and female protagonist who are haunted by an unknown person and are fighting to be together. The 'jumpy' sounding music and quick sharp editing speed reminisces the way in which I shall hopefully edit my own trailer for the final cut.
I think that the way they use the old film style works well with my news report, and gives the trailer a unique sense of branding.

Trailer Process • The Intertitles

I decided to use the same effect on my poster as in my trailer to show a relationship between my texts.

Trailer Process • Deconstructing my First Edits & Shot Types

To make sure I was keeping true to conventional film techniques within the horror genre, I decided to screen shot some of the key frames in my editing process and look at how and why this works for my trailer.

Trailer Process • Editing & Effects

For my intertitles on my trailer, I thought it would be a nice idea to use some location shots underneath the text that have been edited to look like my supernatural sub genre. Here is a PhotoSnack slide show at some of the 60 possibilities and what edited effect they are.

Trailer Process • Ordering, Cuts, Music and Adjustments

On my first day of editing, the initial step was to import my first lot of footage into Adobe Premier Pro, from here I could now start to select which shots I liked best and begin to create a rough order, cut down the bits that I wanted and move them into the trailer. I also placed in some audio that would be the soundtrack for my trailer.

Trailer Process • The Final Soundtrack

For my soundtrack I was influenced by the natural sounds of fear and panic, such as heavy breathing, a heartbeat and a news report style of narration instead of a voiceover. I also wanted to include a childlike rhyming song to go with the horror conventions of creepy children and layer these together over two contrasting dramatic tracks. I did a lot of research into different sound effects, film scores and 'horror soundtracks' that were on YouTube and from this decided to create my own to give a creepy layering effect. I wanted to achieve an invasive sound that gave the audiences a sense of no escape. To do this I used Adobe Audition CS6 to put together multiple tracks and cut them altogether in a new edited and repositioned order. This took a couple of hours to select the original tracks, get the precise cuts and replay parts in different orders to create the final product. I wanted to a make sure my music was authentic and sounded as though it belonged to the supernatural sub genre, so it gave the sinister atmosphere I was hoping for.
Adobe Audition CS6 was a professional piece of software I manage to use easily and helped me achieve an essential part of my trailer editing process.

Trailer Process • Editing The Music

Here is a screenshot of me editing my soundtrack, I chose to upload this to show which tools on Adobe Audition CS6 I used and how I layered the individual tracks in a multitrack session to create my own. The total length of my final cut is 2 minutes and 12 seconds.

Trailer Process • Studio Influences & Why I Chose Lionsgate

I knew from the first stages of editing which film institution was inspiring my work. The shot types and acting style had all come from Lionsgate films, so I made a Prezi to explain my choices.

Trailer Process • The First Stages of Editing

December 4th I brought in my first lot of footage and decided to use Premier Pro to edit my video clips, I uploaded and saved them onto Video Editing HD Mac file. The files were very small and compressed, so this made it difficult to open and edit in iMovie. I feel positive about using this software as it means I can keep the high quality HD filming without making the files too large to save.

Trailer Process • Shot List & Timings

When editing my trailer the first crucial step was making sure the ordering and timings would fit my idea and concept. So I plotted out this shot schedule which would help my editing process stay focused and cohesive.

Trailer Process • Bloopers & Outtakes From Day 2 of Filming

The second day was Dom's first time filming, so we had to take a lot of shots to get what I needed in order to have a variety of choice when editing. Here is the day of filming.
