Poster Process • How I Created My Final Design

Here is a short video demonstration on the process behind creating my final poster and the Adobe Photoshop CS6 tools I used.

Here is a printed transcript of what I say in the video.

Poster Process • Editing The Final Design (Smoke & Other Effects)

My final poster design had a lot of brush effects to it, so I made sure I was using my iPhone to record the process. There are 23 photos uploaded in this PhotoSnack slideshow.

Poster Process • Using Photoshop to Develop Skills Further

I felt it was important to expand on my knowledge with Adobe Photoshop CS6 and look at different brush techniques, blending and layering to give more depth to my poster. I made a Slideshare to demonstrate which tools I used and what effect they had, despite not using this design. I did however learn how I wanted to use two of Emma's faces over the main image to create a ghostly look.

Poster Process • Draft Poster Practise (Photoshop Skills)

I created a draft version of my poster design, to get an idea of how I wanted the layout, colour schemes and effects. This allowed me to practise my skills on Adobe Photoshop CS6 before creating my final poster and develop ideas for style and professional touches along the way.

Poster Process • Credits

Credits are an important part of creating an authentic poster, so I shall make sure I have the same credits from the end of my trailer to the credits on my poster. This is so the look is synergized to my film.

Poster Process • Existing Influences

Having high quality images that showed off my knowledge of the conventions used within the horror genre was really important, so to break down and briefly deconstruct my targets for the photoshoot, I created this biteslide.

Poster Process • Fonts

For my poster, I really wanted to use fonts that would show off the horror genre and give my work a more professional edge. I created a folder of fonts that I liked and then finalised which ones I think worked best with my film synopsis.

Here are some of the fonts as examples that helped create original ideas and inspirations for my poster design ideas.

Poster Process • Design Development

This was my initial poster idea for the photograph.  I made some adjustments to the colour and feel of the picture to give it a darker more authentic look, I then developed this by adding more layers of adjustments to the image and my first pieces of text in place.

I tried to make the image even darker but I felt that this wasn't how I wanted it to look, the edit looked to forced and unauthentic.

I decided to create a ghostly feel by adding a grunge like texture over the top and reduce the opacity so it had a 'scratchy' look over the top.

I also added quotes and star ratings using the text tool to add critical acclaim, however a technical fault meant that after adding the effects I wanted and reducing the opacity, once I'd saved the file the fonts went to blurry to fix. I decided against this poster idea as I felt it didn't look 'horror', it had more of an independent cinema look. So I decided to choose a different layout instead.

I originally chose to challenge the conventional vertical layout, but to show my understanding of professional existing products, I thought it would be best to demonstrate my skills using the preferred formatting. Although I do like the concept of the horizontal poster, I don't think I was able to fit everything I wanted in and convey enough of the horror genre conventions.

Poster Process • Makeup Demonstration (Preparation for Photographs)

To demonstrate my steps towards achieving my look for the film poster, I recorded this video which I edited on Adobe Premier Pro CS6. Here is the YouTube video I uploaded to show how I created my posters makeup design.
